The Ultimate Vodka Whip Band....Ever

Here it is, the ultimate Vodka Whip band ever created. Not only playing some of the finest cock rock tunes crafted, but also featuring members of Vodka Whip endorsed bands, including the King of the Gods, the one and only Danny Vaughn!

They are The 80's Rocked! band. They are playing the Cambridge Rock Festival on Thursday 5th August, one whipper was ecstatic to discover that CAMRA members can get in free on the Thursday and is still to be revived, although this may also be down to mixing his real ale and vodka again...

However, this is the band that any whipper needs to see. They could only be better if they included Forever Young, Don't Treat Me Bad, Dirty Love and Bang Bang in their set, sadly though all those were released in the early 90's.

Tour dates follow in October and November:
26th October, Moho Live, Manchester
30th October, Hall for Cornwall, Truro, Cornwall
31st October, Central Station, Wrexham, Wales
4th November, Central Theatre, Chatham, Kent
5th November 2010, Epsom Playhouse, Epsom, Surrey
6th November 2010, Corn Exchange, Cambridge
15th November 2010, The Journal Tyne Theatre, Newcastle
16th November 2010, The Robin, Bilston, West Midlands

This whipper needs a lie down, the excitement is too much!

Tyketto Back on the Road!

Following hard on the heels of the Nottingham whip last weekend, a couple of lucky whippers will be off to FireFest next weekend to see a bill including the legends that are Tyketto, Firehouse and Danger Danger. A weekend of pure rock heaven!

Tyketto have also announced that they will be touring Europe in January, dates have still to be confirmed, Vodka Whip will keep you updated. There is also talk of South American gigs in May, does anyone know of any cheap flights heading that way?

The Whip on Tour is also close to new dates, negotiations are ongoing with Sheffield, London and Manchester likely destinations, while we are looking for confirmation of a suitable new venue in Birmingham.

Whip On Tour!

Next weekend the whip comes to London, an unsuspecting hotel in a secret location has been booked and discussions are underway as to which club will be visited on Saturday night.

Any rock clubs playing suitable music that want to host a whip visit and receive free publicity on this blog please get in touch, an offer of free entry will never be refused!

You may be wondering why the lack of review from the last whip, well mainly this is due to the shock still felt after 2 of the whip stalwarts were refused entry to Rock City, not once, but twice (happily they eventually found a way in). After frequenting the venue for nearly 20 years we were disgusted at the attitude of the door staff, basically just because they weren't wearing a black T-shirt and don't have the long flowing locks of yesteryear (well curly locks in one case) they were not allowed in. Rock City, you should be ashamed. We still love you but...SORT IT OUT!

The Whip Is On!

It's on the streets, well in the fabled city of rock anyway.

All set for September 8th, a good attendance is expected, and the whippers will be buoyed by the mention of Van Halen in the blurb for Reloaded (Saturday nights in The Rig) that appeared in Kerrang! this week.

There has been mention of a vodka bar visit on the Friday evening, and Ye Olde Salutation may get a visitation, if it is that order then the karaoke may even be tempting!

Get your rocks off!

Nottingham Whip 26th May 2007

The first full whip of the year took place this weekend in Nottingham. Although this was billed as a main whip many months ago, sadly two members could not be present. One member was lost through feeble excuses, the other through an extremely absent minded holiday booking. It is noted here on the blog that both reasons are not acceptable! Anyway, the proceedings started on the Friday (the warm up night) with a trip from the suburbs into Nottingham centre. Firstly a visit was made to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, a fine public house which soon became the scene of blasphemous events. Upon entry one member of the party was openly ripped by the slightly stout Yeoman of the bar for wearing nothing other than a Tyketto T shirt. The heretic (aging dinosaur rocker) then launched a verbal assault on Danny Vaughn himself, together with a general rubbishing of all acoustic guitar music. Whilst the pub is both an unusual and interesting venue, it clearly is the home of unbelievers and should be approached with caution. Following a drink we moved onto the Salutation Inn. Upon entry, the ground floor was found to be a standard Nottingham establishment, however up stairs was a haven of rock. Friday night was Karaoke night, and much was talked about entry to sing a 'cock rock' number to the full audience of the Sal. Wisely and due to insufficient vocal ranges, no entry was made.

The Saturday saw the full whip proceedings, following a visit to a local building of historic interest. After the full appreciation of a bottle of Skyy vodka by the members of the whip (coupled with the usually caffine based energy drinks and 'cock rock' DvD), the party moved to Nottingham, starting this time with the Sal. Once again the upstairs was a rock haven, although this time with no Karaoke. Following a swift visit to the Tap 'n' Tumbler, entry was made into the city of rock. Music was varied but did incorporate a reasonable amount of 'cock rock' enabling the members to indulge in the usual ludicrous dancing and total loss of self respect. During the evening contact was made with an indirect whip victim of some 15 years ago. Whilst this individual did not attend the whip, they did have the (mis)fortune of meeting the whip members post whip, joining in with the drinking throughout the evening. This was the last time the individual was seen for 15 years. The mystery was solved however, when the facts were established. Following a collapse, hospitalisation and being 45 times over the legal limit, the individual involved was advised not to drink for a number of days unless death was desired. They then avoided alcohol for a number of years. This is clear evidence of how important the whip is in preparation for a night of binge drinking. One other notable event was the trial of a new Tyketto dance. Whilst still in development a new synchronised dance emerged incorporating many complex maneuvers requiring both concentration and agility. Further choreography is required, but early indications are that this new development is a direct result of extensive brain cell damage due to vodka abuse.

Whip a Week Early?

It would appear the whip may have been staged a week early. Check this poodle rock extravaganza out, it even has a link to a 'Forever Young' cover:

Nottingham Rock City - Is it still rock?

A crisis has hit Vodka Whip towers, it was bad enough when news reached us that our beloved 80's/90's rock had been cornered into one Friday night a month. But now it seems that while the main rock/alternative night is back on a Saturday, there is a lack of the hair rock we worship.

This is grave news as it may threaten the frequency of future visits to the spiritual home of the whip, so we need YOUR help...

If you are reading this the chances are you found our page thanks to a mention of one of the rock bands we love. If you have visited Rock City in the last few months, please post a comment or email us (vodkawhip@hotmail.com) to tell us what the chances are of hearing those bands on a Saturday (or indeed Friday if our info is wrong) night.

Your input will be very much appreciated, for information leading to a successful whip visit we'll buy you a drink (vodka based of course) in Rock City itself.

Sheffield (Whip on Tour) 27th April 2007 - Sheffield Casbah

The Casbah is a decent venue, the fact that it was located in the same block as our hotel being an unexpected bonus on this occasion.

The unusual aspect about this club is the bar upstairs that feels just like, well a bar, the room downstairs is very much a club style room though. We were surprised to find that this room wasn't open when we arrived a little after 11pm. A number of the rockier elements of the clientele were looking slightly uncomfortable in the bar with a selection of indie style music filling the air.

At 11:30 the barrier was opened and the Whip contingent were the first down the stairs, straight onto the dancefloor for Extreme's Get The Funk Out. The music early on was of suitable whip style, later on the heavier side of rock was merged in although a few tracks still enticed us on to the floor.

Notable other attractions included the young lady with the flashing sign, yes I would have bought you a drink if you hadn't made a mistake with your grammar!, and the young lady giving her boyfriend an entertaining lapdance. A fine selection of vodka based drinks was on offer at reasonable prices.

A slightly early bolt for the door was instigated by one of our number, provoking a ripping from the security on the way out. Still with the lack of energy on Saturday morning anyway, it may have been wise...

All in all a fine venue, a slightly higher proportion of cock rock in the DJs collection wouldn't go amiss though!

Vodka Whip On Tour

So a venture out for a mini-whip in Sheffield this weekend, research has generated a veritable list of suitable venues with the Dove & Rainbow and Casbah favourites for Friday night with D&R, Lord Nelson and Corporation the likely haunts for Saturday.

Just don't tell the hotel we are smuggling vodka in!

Here We Go Again

It's been a bit quiet on here recently, well yes, we all had New Year to get over first! However, all has not been quiet in the world of the whip.

Firstly there was the potentially controversial move of the first Nottingham whip of the year to the weekend of May 25th/26th. No objections have been posted but we are waiting for confirmation of the accommodation arrangements, hopefully a large bunch of flowers on Valentine's Day has helped ease the request through...

Secondly a proposed Sheffield whip looked doomed due to a clash with the World Snooker Championship, our usual hotel was fully booked, a more expensive alternative has been secured, but this does have the added advantage of being even closer to our usual destinations. The weekend of April 27th/28th will see a Vodka Whip visit to Sheffield's Casbah, Corporation and Lord Nelson, DJs please dust down your copy of Forever Young for us.

Finally the legend that is Danny Vaughn is starting to announce tour dates. So far this has thrown the possibility of a live leanback at Dudley JB's into the equation on Saturday May 12th. There is a club after the gig so Mr T is proposing a hotel overnighter, early indications of interest from the fellow whippers may be necessary to secure the accommodation required. Sadly a double header on this occasion is not possible for Mr T due to an earlier booking for Bryan Adams on the Friday evening!

So a month full of Vodka Whips and cock rock looks on the cards, gentlemen start your emails please!

Vodka Whip venue destroyed: Edwards No.8 is no more

This is a post to mark the passing of the Edwards No.8 that was burnt down at the weekend. Of the 500 revellers inside, all were evacuated safely.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that if we had been in there after a full pre-match Vodka Whip build up, then the charred remains of numerous aging rockers may have been found, their feet still nailed to the dance floor in a rough circle leaving just enough room for a hip rotation to allow a full 5 player lean back.

Think Pompeii on August 23, 79 AD.

The search for a new venue will begin in earnest. However, we hope to be able to return to Edwards No.8 before too long. We wish the management and staff of the Edwards all the best in their quest to restore theis fine venue to it's former glory.

See below for the full news story.

City nightclub destroyed by fire

A major fire has destroyed a busy nightclub in Birmingham's city centre.
Five hundred people had to be led to safety as the blaze took hold in the early hours at Edward's No.8 club.

Ten people were treated for minor injuries but firefighters, who praised nightclub staff for their actions, say all inside the club escaped.

Up to 50 firefighters tackled the blaze and prevented flames spreading to nearby apartment blocks. Structural tests will be carried out later.

About 25 firefighters remained at the scene in Lower Severn Street on Sunday.
Building evacuated.

Sub divisional officer Gary Yendell, of West Midlands Fire Service, said: "Considering that 500 people [were inside] I think it's a very good success story in terms of the evacuation.

"And that is down to the training of the door staff and the management."

People in city centre apartments watched the drama unfold

Fire crews were first alerted to a fire in a men's toilet at the club at about 0110 GMT, and appliances from across the city were called in.

It was initially feared that clubbers could have been trapped in the burning building but it was later determined that everyone inside had escaped.

One eyewitness, who lives in an apartment block close to the scene, said he could see flames and smoke shooting from the roof of the club.

Rabinder Bhachu, a BBC employee, said: "I was woken by the noise of the fire engines, as well as the smell of smoke coming into my building.

"The club is between two streets, and there seems to be flames coming from either side of the building. It does seem to be spreading."

The Origins and the Early Days

The 'Home of the Whip' post has got me reminiscing about those early days back in the late 80's/early 90's. I recall fondly, the start of the 'whip' and in particular the transition from a simple gathering of friends in a suburb of Nottingham, prior to a journey on public transport into town, into a vodka fuelled hour or two, culminating in air punching, over animated dancing and quite simply ridiculous behaviour in a rock club.

As I recall in the early days, the simple gathering was a mere meeting up of friends prior to catching the bus into town. At first a few cans of larger/beer and even cider were consumed prior to the 15 minute or so journey. It soon became evident that the 'odd' can was simply having little effect on the individuals involved. Slowly but surely the stakes were raised. Stronger drinks were sought to induce a greater effect. At first, various spirits were dabbled with. I remember with a tear in my eye, necking Pernod and Cherry Brandy on the odd occasion. Whilst these strange choices of spirit achieved their purpose, they did not mix all that well with the drinking which would invariably ensue once town, and the public house of choice, were reached. So the scene was set. A spirit was required which would achieve the maximum effect in the minimum time and with the minimum fuss. One which was as tasteless as possible, and could be disguised and mixed easily. Based on these objectives there could only be one choice - Vodka, the transition was made.

On the first occasion, a short walk to the off licence resulted in a small half bottle of the cheapest vodka known to man. The brand of choice here was usually either Imperial Chekov, Red Flag or the Prince Consort. These fine brands were usually mixed with an orange cordial (Kia-Ora usually being 1st choice). At first, half a bottle between two or three people as a 'warm up' drink was more than enough, even appearing excessive, considering there was around 3 hours drinking time in a public house prior to a rock club visit. But we were all on a slippery slope.

Slowly but surely the amount of vodka that the participants craved was increasing. Not only was the volume needed to achieve the same state of euphoria rising, but so was the levels of euphoria. I remember the shock that was openly proclaimed when a full 700 cl bottle was purchased at the start of the evening. This was followed a number of weeks later as things escalated to a feeling of shame when it was your turn to go back to off licence, and the same disapproving old lady behind the counter, to purchase further vodka supplies less than one hour after the previous purchase. As the drinking involved in the warm up or 'pre match' as it was favourably called, was increasing, so was the duration. Now the session was progressing in importance into a mini event in its own right. It was expanded to include listening to CD's and more favourably watching videos recorded on MTV's 'Headbangers Ball' and several visits to the off licence. At this point the vodka drinking had extended into a session lasting over one hour. As the drinking at these events progressed still further the state of inebriation and induced euphoria increased notably. At its peak, the participants would head for town clad in a variety of outrageous clothes. Shirts (often made of silk) would be chosen based on there suitability as potential 'stage wear' for a late 80's/early 90's hair metal band. The saying was "you can never go too far", although in hind sight and without ¾ of a bottle of vodka coursing through my veins, we frequently did! By now rather than a 'warm up', the vodka driven members would arrive at the first chosen public house for the evening, moving in an over animated fashion and in a total state of euphoria. It was normal under this delusional condition, to strut in like one was an owner of the property itself, scarcely realising that ones voice was slightly slurred and that ones shirt was undone to the near navel. In fact I recall it was standard practice to administer a degree of ribbing for wearing a shirt only undone by a mere few buttons from the neck.

In this form the 'vodka whip' as it was now known to all, including individuals outside of the immediate circle of participants, occurred on a virtual weekly basis over the period of the next few years. At times it even progressed to twice a week, with a rock club visit on both the Friday and the Saturday night. At this point the hard core of individuals involved were putting away a bottle of the clear stuff a week, before they even left the house! As the years progressed the 'whip' travelled to the locations previously mentioned in the post 'The Home of the Whip'. Many individuals who were not regulars, joined for the odd few occasions. Most enjoyed a fine evening of entertainment, returning for further 'whips' when ever possible. Even to this day, some 15 years on, some still talk fondly of the occasions, whilst others who took a 'beating', becoming victims of the 'whip', try to pretend to his day, that they were never really involved.

Over the years the most unlikely people, now high ranking and respected members of the community could once be seen strutting bear chested in a frenzied state of vodka fuelled madness, punching the air to the hair metal rock tunes of the day. No one who has ever participated in a full 'vodka whip' is unscathed by its effects, both good and bad, as many photographs are in existence to prove.

The Home of the Whip

The Vodka Whip has had many hosts over the years, but home is where the heart is and for the Whip that has to be Nottingham.

It all started in the late-80s in Netherfield. Veterans of the Whip's early days will tell more about those fledging Whips and the various locations for the early evening festivities. The Whip also had a home in Leicester around 1988-91 as well as visiting Sheffield and Birmingham.

My first encounter with the Vodka Whip was at it's mid-nineties home in Lenton, hazy memories of Prince Consort and Kia-Ora, whip tunes being played from a cassette tape (remember them), and a two hundred mile round trip on my Honda H100.

The Lord was the host with the most in those days, life and work then taking him, and the Whip, to Manchester. The Vodka Whip found temporary bases in Rusholme and then Chorlton. Meanwhile the Nottingham Whip found a new home in Beeston, keeping it's roots firmly intact.

It was also during this time that the Whip ventured out to far flung places, Philthy's house warming Whip in Colchester and a Stag Whip took in the delights of Yeovil thanks to the hospitality of Sleazy.
Further trips out "on tour" have seen mini-Whips return to Sheffield (hosted at a highly recommended hotel but that's another post), back to Colchester for Philthy's 30th and the highly enjoyable Stag Whip At Butlin's Skegness.

In the meantime alongside the regular Whips in Nottingham, courtesy of Mr G, The Lord relocated to the vicinity of another former Whip venue visited, Birmingham. Whips now base themselves in the Studley area before heading into Birmingham itself, (see other posts for details of the most recent Whip), this has created a rather enjoyable new feature that has seen us taking in the Studley FC game on the Saturday afternoon prior to the Whip.
